Best of the Best Awards

By

BEST SONG/TRACK

presented by PBS

A short musical composition which can be with or without words.

Nominees in this category are determined by a judging panel, with winners determined by public voting.

BEST ALBUM

presented by Triple R

An album would generally be accepted to have at least nine tracks, or be 33 minutes in length, with a minimum requirement that a track includes at least 20 seconds of music. However, we understand that artists define whether their release is an album or ep, and some genres are more likely to have short songs and therefore albums that fall short of 33 minutes in length. Live albums and cover albums are included.

Nominees in this category are determined by a judging panel, with winners determined by public voting.

BEST SOLO ARTIST

presented by Triple R

An artist that performs under their own name or a pseudonym.

This category does not include lead singers of bands unless they’re being nominated for a separate and current solo career (i.e. they release music and play shows under their own name or solo pseudonym).

Nominees in this category are determined by a judging panel, with winners determined by public voting.

BEST DJ

presented by City of Melbourne

A person who skilfully layers, manipulates and mixes (via a mixer, CDJs, turntables or live set up) pre-made music (their own originals and/or others) and other musical elements and sounds together to create a new form of creative expression.

Nominees in this category are determined by a judging panel, with winners determined by public voting.

BEST PRODUCER

presented by AON

Someone who oversees, engineers, and manages the sound recording and production of a solo artist or group’s music. This can include a person who produces their own work or a sound engineer who plays a guiding role in recording.

Judging for this category is completed by a panel.

Acknowledgement for First Nations Artists

With First Nations Artists now winning and nominated across every category, in 2024 the Archie Roach Foundation enabled Music Victoria to focus on making the process more culturally appropriate. This has seen Music Victoria begin the process by developing a guidance group who will set the timelines, eligibility, criteria, and prize for 2024 and offer wrap around support.

“Competition was never something that Dad was keen on.” – Amos Roach

“It’s great Music Victoria is still supporting and honouring Indigenous musicians. Our Songlines always have and always will continue.” – Kutcha Edwards

“We are delighted to see that the Music Victoria Awards will continue to uplift and showcase emerging First Nations talent in Victoria.” – Uncle Robbie, Songlines

“Having a specific First Nations award acknowledges the many barriers First Nations people have to overcome in the industry and generates multiple opportunities for all nominees.” – Bumpy, previous Nominee and Winner.

Music Victoria are delighted to share that after working with closely with Uncle Kutcha Edwards, Uncle Robbie Bundle, Amos Roach, Neil Morris (DRMNGNOW), Allara Briggs Pattison, Candice Lorrae, Amy Dowd (Bumpy), Kee’ahn Bindol, and Charlie Woodes (Charlie Needs Braces) this year’s awards will feature the newly created Footprint Award.

This new Award is for and from mob, acknowledging a musical artist who (perhaps unbeknownst to themselves) has created a lasting legacy through their music, as well as their actions. The winner of the inaugural Footprint Award will be revealed on Thursday October 24.

To be kept across this process of evolution please sign up here.

“We thank all past ARF award entrants, nominees, winners, judges, performers, members and Aboriginal Elders past and present, and the wider First People music community for their ongoing engagement and commitment to continuing culture.” – Simone Schinkel, CEO, Music Victoria

Am I eligible to enter for a genre award?

As a general rule, to enter a genre category, the entrant must have released at least 3 singles, an album or an EP between 1 July 2023 – 30 June 2024.

Solo artists must reside in Victoria – and it should be noted that the residency of their backing band is not considered. For groups, at least 50% of the act must have been living in Victoria for the last two years, or use Victoria as a home base.

The Experimental or Avant-Garde category requires slightly more nuance, where we also allow a publicly available recording of at least 10 minutes in length (standalone or cumulative). Full details of eligibility are included in the submission form.

How do I choose the best genre for my music?

We know that the landscape of genre is constantly evolving, and simply invite you to follow your gut. You can only submit to one genre. Our judges are music industry experts who are across movements in the Victorian scene and represent the full breadth of each genre. We support self identification.

Judging for all genre awards is completed by a panel of industry judges.
